If you accumulate 12 points in a 3 year period that will trigger a suspension. Note : The NCDMV determines "accumulation" by the offense date of the charge, so continuing a last charge in the hope of the prior ones aging out will not work. If the NCDMV can put 12pts on a time line by offense date in a 3 year span that will trigger a revocation, irrespective of the conviction date.
